Acting Experience Behind Today’s Actor Headshots

Marc Cartwright is a Studio City-based photographer specializing in authentic portraiture for the film, television, and corporate sectors. With over 18 years of experience on both sides of the lens, his approach is grounded in collaboration and a deep understanding of what makes an image "work" in a competitive professional market.

Originally from Long Island’s East End, Marc’s fascination with visual storytelling began with classic Hollywood cinema. He moved to New York City at 18 to study Mass Media and Human Behavior at NYU, where he discovered photography—a medium that perfectly bridged his interest in psychology with his fascination for human expression.

After graduating, Marc moved to the West Coast to pursue acting, building a successful commercial and print career with major brands including Coca-Cola and Tommy Hilfiger. This firsthand experience on set gave him an "insider’s" perspective on what casting directors, agents, and producers actually respond to. Eventually, he transitioned fully behind the camera, finding his true creative focus in guiding others toward their most confident, competitive representation.

Today, Marc provides directed sessions for working actors and creative executives throughout Southern California. His photography and industry expertise are frequently featured in national and international publications. As a regular Backstage Magazine contributor, he remains at the forefront of casting trends, frequently writing on the elements of effective actor headshots.

From his natural light studio in Studio City, Marc creates cinematic headshots designed to help professionals present themselves with clarity, staying true to who they are while meeting the high standards of the Los Angeles entertainment and business communities.
