Actor Headshot Advice: How I Approach Headshots

What Makes an Effective Headshot in Today’s Market?

A headshot doesn't book the job. It gets you called in. That distinction shapes every session I shoot. I direct actors toward specific, believable moments instead of asking for a smile and a stare, because casting responds to connection, not polish. Here's the framework behind that approach, and the guides that go deeper on each piece of it.

Direction matters. Personality matters. Intent matters.

The most successful theatrical and commercial headshots show exactly who you are and where you fit into the current TV and film landscape. My goal with every actor headshot session is to help you move past posing toward images that feel intentional and specific.

Every session at my Studio City location is built around active direction, guiding you toward grounded, specific moments. That needs to come across the moment your thumbnail shows up on Actors Access or Casting Networks.

The 3 Pillars of a Bookable Headshot:

  • Eyes that Tell a Story: Moving beyond the "blank stare" to show internal life.

  • Specific Casting Range: Clothing and vibe that target your specific "type."

  • Technical Clarity:Professional lighting that highlights your features without looking "over-retouched."

As a regular Backstage Magazine contributor, I write monthly on the technical and creative side of actor headshot photography. These six guides put that approach into practice, covering the specific decisions actors face before, during, and after a session.
